Applications - Building Automation

What enables a facilities manager to better manage resources, improve building safety, and reduce energy costs? Of course, an intelligent building automation system. An intelligent building can be created with system and sensor networking technology. This allows a manager to remotely control virtually every system from a central location.

Smart Network Devices products make it possible to integrate building sub-systems (security, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning) , lighting, lifts/elevators and safety systems) into a single, efficient building management network. Not only are Ethernet networks supported but wireless technologies like Bluetooth and WLAN, too. With the use of these different data communication channels to a single point it is possible to increase efficiency of the management of the automation equipment within a building or facility.

Smart Network Device provide protocols like TCP/IP, UDP, FTP, Email Standards (POP3, SMTP), Bluetooth 1.2 (Certified) as well as the Java K virtual machine and more. Based on the operating system HyNetOS dedicated for use in embedded control networks these unique combination of protocols and operating system (OS) offers a stable platform for all building automation tasks.

SND also have many other device drivers (e.g. TFT controllers, touch panel, CODEC, JPEG, biometric sensors, serial and parallel interfaces) for applications such as human machine interface and visualisation, MP3, and security and recognition.

For example, a facilities manager responsible for a large building can control everything from the electrical and water metering requirements to building access from a single PC terminal, and can even diagnose system problems remotely.

Since HVAC represents a significant percentage of a building’s operational cost, intelligent management of HVAC systems is critical for keeping energy consumption under control. Lighting and water management systems are also responsible for a great deal of natural resource usage. Networking these systems can lead to a dramatic decrease in energy consumption, greatly reducing overall cost and as a bi-product reducing enviromental emissions/damage too.

When it comes to building safety, real-time remote system communication is extremely important. The ability to proactively diagnose and troubleshoot potential problems with lifts/elevators is an obvious benefit. If an alarm is triggered, the facilities manager can immediately enquire by computer remotely and see what’s going on. Smart Network Devices can even help manage the panning and tilting of surveillance cameras – yet another way Smart Network Devices can contribute to building safety!

Example Applications:

  • Building access controls
  • HVAC controls
  • Lighting controllers
  • Thermostat
  • Lifts / Elevators
  • Escalators
